Dear friends of Holy Trinity Chico –

I hope you are well and are enjoying the beauty of this season as you deepen your relationship with Christ. Please be in prayer for the upcoming elections. This is a defining moment for America, California and Chico. Pray that the Lord would cause righteousness and justice to win out in the propositions we enact and the leaders we elect. Pray that God will stir his Church to return to him with zeal, boldness and holy love. Now, more than ever, we need stand up, speak out, vote and be difference-makers in our world.

Last Sunday, we resumed our study of Paul’s letter to the Romans, focusing on chapter four and the role played by Abraham, who took God at his word and, in return for his faith, had God’s saving righteousness credited to his account. In the same way, we are justified—made right with God—by taking God at his word, trusting in Jesus for our salvation. If you missed the service, you can watch it here.

This Sunday, we will have our Harvest Festival right after the service. We’ll enjoy chili and cornbread together and have lots of fun things for the kids to do. During the service, Craig will teach on one of the most jaw dropping sections of the letter: Romans 5:1-11. Each verse is a storehouse of spiritual truth. It’s one of those texts that you might want to memorize so you can meditate on it continually. For those unable to attend in person, be sure to tune in to our livestream at 9am Sunday morning or watch the recording during the following week here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwk75lKGVUw

If you are looking for a small group bible study, I invite you to join us on Tuesday nights from 7-8 pm for sharing, prayer and a study of the Letter of James. We meet in the sanctuary at the church and would love to have you be a part. You can also attend via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81655475348

Here are a few upcoming dates for you to get on your calendar.

  • Oct 28 – CareNet annual banquet
  • Nov 18 – YWAM annual banquet
  • Nov 20 – Friendsgiving dinner
  • Dec 24 – Our Christmas eve/Christmas service (Note: No service on Dec 25th)

As you’ve noticed, we have started our renovation work on the church. We have a number of projects planned, both in the building and outside on the grounds. If you are interested in being a part of one or more of these, will you please let Tom know of your interest and availability? You can simply respond to this newsletter or talk to Tom on Sunday. We want the church to be a sacred space that expresses the beauty, peace and glory of the great God we know and love.

Can you set aside an hour this week to pray for Christ’s Church, our nation, state and city? There is a group of us who have been meeting for two years on Fridays from 12-1pm at the church building. We have been asking the Lord to bring repentance and new life to his people, to expose evil, frustrate the plans of bad actors and restore righteousness, integrity and love in our land. We have seen so many concrete answers to prayer. Please consider joining us this week and as often as you can make it. “The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much” (James 5:16b).

Thanks so much for your continued prayers for those in our body who face health issues, losses, financial difficulties and other challenges. Please be in prayer particularly for James Johnson (cancer), Tom and Connie Vervoorn (medical issue, major house fire), Danielle Penne (upcoming surgery, Emmett and Pat Jarvis (Louis’ dad [stage 4 cancer] and mom [dementia]), Phil Larios (medical issue), Kaylinn Hignell (cancer), John and Julie Conner (death of John’s mom), Nola Taylor (hospice care), Barb Trimmer (medical issues). Please continue to pray for an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine and for God’s will to be done in the upcoming midterm elections. Thank you!

In the Father’s vast love –

Tom
