Dear friends of Holy Trinity Chico –
I’ve been reading in the Psalms in my morning quiet times, and this morning’s text—Psalm 50—was another arresting reminder of the majesty and sovereignty of God. The psalm begins with these august words:
“The Mighty One, God, Yahweh,
speaks and summons the earth…”
Who can speak authoritatively to the whole earth, much less “summon” every one of its inhabitants to attention? God alone. And he has given all authority to his Son, the Lord Jesus, to judge the world in righteousness when he returns. Until then, it’s good for us to remember that, while God in rich in mercy and compassion, he is still “the high and holy One who inhabits eternity” (Isa 57:15).
Last Sunday, we started a new series of lessons on Paul’s letter to the Romans, working our way through the first seven verses of chapter one. In this text, the Apostle describes himself, the Gospel he preached and the recipients of his letter, whom he referred to as beloved of God, called (chosen by God) and holy (cleansed by God). If you missed the service, you can view the recording here.
This Sunday, we will pick up our study on Romans with 1:8-17. Please read over those verses ahead of time, focusing especially on verses 16-17, where Paul lays out his summary statement for the letter’s theological argument. Come with your observations and questions. For those unable to attend in person, be sure to tune in to our livestream at 9am Sunday morning or watch the recording during the following week. Please plan to join us a week from this Saturday, August 27, from 8am-12pm, for a ½ day of sprucing up the church and grounds! We’ll provide snacks for the event and supply additional information this Sunday.
If God has been prompting you to pray more for his Church and for our nation, state and city, we’d love for you to join us on Fridays at the church building from 12-1pm. We are asking the Lord to bring repentance and new life, expose evil, frustrate the plans of bad actors and restore righteousness, integrity and love in our land. Come join us!
Thanks so much for your continued prayers for those in our body who face health issues, losses, financial difficulties and other challenges. Please be in prayer particularly for Ron Craig (recurring infection), Tom and Connie Vervoorn (major house fire), Danielle Penne (constant pain and upcoming surgery), Lynne Waite (back pain), Emmett and Pat Jarvis (Louis’ dad [stage 4 cancer] and mom [dementia]), Phil Larios (medical issue), Jackie Musselman (recovery from knee surgery), James Johnson (cancer), Kaylinn Hignell (cancer), Nola Taylor (hospice care), Bob (salvation) and Barb Brown (colitis) and Barbara Trimmer (medical issues). Please continue to for an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine and for God’s mercy in the upcoming mid-term elections. And pray for God to protect the lives of the unborn children in the face of the massive abortion industry. Thank you!
In his love –
