The fifth Sunday of Epiphany: February 4, 2024

Holy Trinity Church – Tom Mount

Scripture reading: John 1:1-2, 14, 16-18

  • Epiphany (“revealing”) celebrates the fact that, in Jesus, certain important spiritual truths were disclosed to humanity. Jesus revealed many things.
  • Today, we’ll focus on our Lord’s revelation of the Father in his life, using John’s prologue as our staging point (see John 14:9). We will start by using an ancient monastic practice of sacred reading called lectio divina.

Lectio divina on John 1:1-2, 14, 16-18

1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God…

14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth…

16 “For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.”

  • Verses 1-2, 18: What was it that qualified Jesus to reveal the Father?

  • Verse 18: How did Jesus “explain” God? What did he reveal about the nature and character of the Father?

  • Verse 16: How can you and I “receive of his fullness… grace upon grace” each day?

What is it that the Lord has spoken to you personally through his Word today? How are you going to obey it?
